New car sales in Italy are up just 1.5% year-on-year in August at 70,732 registrations, with the year-to-date total down 12% at 1,228,501 units. The Fiat Punto (7.4%) and Panda (6.4%) lead, but the performance of the month is delivered by the newly relaunched Lancia Ypsilon, on the podium for the first time since February 2006. At 3,057 sales and 4.3% it is just short of the highest ever market share reached by the nameplate in the country: 4.5% in January 2004.
The Ford Fiesta ranks 4th just one unit below the Ypsilon and is followed by the VW Golf (3%) and Polo (2.9%). The Fiat 500 is at a weak 7th place this month. Good performers include the Citroen C3 up 10 spots on July to #8, the Fiat Freemont confirming its success in the peninsula at #18 with 968 sales and 1.4% and the Audi A4 up 13 spots to #19.
