Japan Kei cars April 2011: Subaru stops, places Stella in Top 10
The Japanese Kei car market is down 45% this month with 76,849 registrations, due to repercussions from the March 11 quake. On May 8, Subaru announced it would stop producing Kei cars with best-seller Stella being halted as early as the end of the month. Stock-clearing rebates could therefore be responsible for the Stella jumping up 6 spots on last month to #9.
Atop the ranking, the podium stays unchanged albeit at much lower levels than last month. The Suzuki WagonR leads at 7,919 sales, ahead of the Daihatsu Move at 7,468 (but still #1 year-to-date with 54,683 sales) and the Daihatsu Tanto at 6,164 units. The Honda Life is up one spot to #4 and the Suzuki Palette is up 2 to #8.
