Saudi Arabia 2002-2003: Honda, Isuzu impress, Camry #1

The Honda Accord ranks #7 in Saudi Arabia both in 2002 and 2003.

The Saudi new car market is up by a further 9.2% year-on-year in 2002 to a record 235,076 units. Toyota (+3.8%) sees its share drop from 39.1% to 37.2% while Nissan (-20.8%) is in great difficulty at 11.3% of the market vs. 15.6% in 2001. Honda (+134.1%) shoots up four spots to #3, dislodging Chevrolet (+3.5%), Hyundai (-0.2%), Isuzu (+59.5%) and Ford (+2.6%). GMC (+73.4%) is back inside the Top 10 at #9 while Kia (+41.3%) and Mitsubishi (+26.4%) also impress. Meanwhile Peugeot (+196.4%) surges 8 ranks to #14.

Model-wise, the Toyota Camry (-14.6%) lodges a 5th straight annual win but its share thaws from a record 16% to 12.5%. Toyota monopolises the podium for the first time with the Hilux (+7%) and Land Cruiser 100 (+67.8%) in tow. The best of the rest is the Nissan Datsun (-19.1%) albeit down to #4. The Toyota Corolla (-1.8%) remains in 5th position. The Isuzu KB (+69.4%) and Honda Accord (+207.1%) both post surreal gains, the later scoring its first ever Top 10 finish at #7. The Honda Civic (+98.3%) is up 7 ranks to #11 and the GMC Yukon XL (+41.3%) up to #13.

In 2003, sales are up a stunning +26.6% to a new record 297,511 units. Toyota (+29.3%) edges past the market growth to improve its share to 38%, leaving Nissan (+17%) in the dust at 10.5%. Isuzu (+91.7%) shoots up 91.7% to reach 7.1% share and climbs onto the podium for the first time at #3. Hyundai (+42.6%) is up one spot to #4, followed  by Chevrolet (+9.6%) and Mitsubishi (+81%). Honda (-12.4%) falls back to earth at #7 with Ford (+28.2%) and Kia (+25.7%) both evolving roughly like the market. Daewoo (+1043.6%) has a breakthrough at #11.

The Toyota Camry (+54.1%) is the overall best-seller for the 6th year in a row, and this time Toyota monopolises the Top 4 with the Hilux (-4%), Corolla (+91.7%) and Land Cruiser 100 (-15.1%) in tow. The Isuzu D-Max, replacing the KB, lands directly at a brilliant 5th position. The Nissan Datsun (-15.1%) is in trouble at #6 and now ranks #3 pickup. The Honda Accord (+19.3%) repeats at #7 ahead of the Nissan Pulsar (+84.5%) and Chevrolet Lumina (+33.2%).
