After losing 45% in 1998, the Filipino car market is down a further 8% in 1999 at 74,007 registrations and stays very low in 2000 (83,887 units) and 2001 (76,668). The market leader throughout is the Toyota Revo (for “Revolution”) that replaced the Tamaraw FX and managed what its predecessor never did: beating the Toyota Corolla. The Revo leads with an enormous 15.3% share in ’99, 14.1% in ’00 and 13.2% in ’01.
The Honda Civic stays 2nd in ’99 with 6,827 sales and 9.2% but gets passed by the Mitsubishi Adventure in ’00 at 6,824 units and 8.1%, improving to 7,711 sales and 10.1% in ’01. In spite of the new generation arriving in 2000, the Toyota Corolla is down to #3 in ’99 at 7.5% and #4 in ’00 (6.4%) and ’01 (7.1%).
Other successes during the period include the Nissan Sentra, #5 in ’99, the Isuzu Hi-Lander, #5 in ’00 and #3 in ’01, the Honda CR-V, #6 in ’99 and the Nissan Exalta, #6 in ’00 and ’01. Notice the Mitsubishi Pajero breaking into the year-end Filipino Top 10 for the first time in ’99.
