With 2,254,733 units sold in 2001, the French market is up 6% and delivers its third best year ever behind 1990 and 1989. The Peugeot 206 takes the lead for the first time in the country with 211,220 sales and a 9.4% share. This is the last year a model sold more than 200,000 units in 12 months in France, as the market got more and more fragmented afterwards. The Renault Clio is still very solid in 2nd with just under 190,000 sales and 8.4%, ahead of the Scenic dropping 10%. The Renault Laguna misses the 100k mark by a few hundreds, up 50% vs. ’00, and the Peugeot 307, launched during the year, is already 5th with 3.8%.

There are no foreign cars in the Top 10, with the VW Golf leading the charge at #11 with 2.7%, followed by the VW Polo at #13, Fiat Punto at #14, Opel Corsa at #15, Ford Focus at #17 and Opel Zafira at #18.
