Turkey 1994-1995: Tofas Sahin, Dogan, Renault 9, 12 on top in collapsing market

The Tofas Sahin is the best-selling vehicle in Turkey in 1994 and 1995.

In 1994, the Turkish new car market completely collapses, losing half its volume to 249,980 units. The Top 3 brands increase their footprint and add up to 74.3% of total sales. Tofas (-45%) advances to 38.1% share, followed by Renault (-44.8%) at 29.7% and Fiat (-36.7%) at 6.5%. Opel (-52.4%) suffers but gains one spot on 1993 to #4 while Ford (+49.8%) signs the only YoY uptick in the Top 15, shooting up 6 ranks on last year to #5. Only Mercedes (-46.7%) manages to beat the market in the remainder of the Top 10, with Lada (-85.5%), Skoda (-76.9%) and Toyota (-73.3%) hit particularly hard.

Model-wise, the Top 5 is unchanged on 1993, with the Tofas Sahin (-43.2%) in the lead with 18.7% of the market, distancing the Renault 9 (-45.1%) at 15.4%, the Tofas Dogan (-41.9%) at 13.6%, the Renault 12 (-52.9%) at 9.8% and the Tofas Kartal (-56.2%) at 4.4%. The Fiat Tipo (+158.5%) is up 16 spots to #8.

Sales are stable in 1995 at +0.9% to 252,134. Tofas (-21.7%) freefalls and loses almost ten percentage points of market share, going from 38.1% to 29.6%. Renault on the other hand (-6.8%) even through it is in negative, only falls from 29.7% to 27.4% and gets a lot closer to Tofas. Toyota (+490.3%) is the performer of the year, surging from 1.4% share in 1994 to 8.5% this year. Fiat (+11.6%), Opel (+12.5%) and Ford (+15.1%) all drop by one spot as a result but all beat the market. BMW (+29.9%) also shines at #8 while Volkswagen (+180.5%) soars to #11.

Model-wise, the Tofas Sahin (-30.5%) holds onto the top spot but sees its share thaw from 18.7% to 12.9%. The Renault 9 (-23%), although in difficulty too, is getting closer at 11.7%. The Top 4 is unchanged with the Tofas Dogan (-30.8%) and Renault 12 (-9%) in tow. The Toyota Corolla (+632.2%) surges from 1.2% share in 1994 to 8.4% now, followed by the Renault 19 (+675.6%) also in outstanding shape. The Tofas Kartal (+21.8%) is down two spots to #7 as a result but is still soldi. Other great gainers in the Top 10 are the Fiat Uno (+506.6%), Ford Escort (+48.9%) and Opel Vectra (+22.8%).
