China 1994: FAW Tianjin teases Volkswagen for #1 brand
FAW Tianjin ends the year just 7,300 sales below Volkswagen.
The Chinese new vehicle market slows down its growth in 1994 at “just” +11% year-on-year to 1,173,151 sales. Volkswagen (+9.3%) is slower and is now threatened by FAW Tianjin (+69.7%) only 7,300 units below. Yuejin (+80.8%) is up seven spots to #3 ahead of BAW (+24%) and Foton (+105.7%). FAW (-3.8%) drops three ranks to #6 while Wuling (+16.4%) and Isuzu (+18%) beat the market in the remainder of the Top 10. Toyota (-37.9%) freefalls from #5 to #13.
The VW Santana (+15.3%) holds onto the top spot and for the 2nd straight month it is the only nameplate above 100,000 units. The FAW Tianjin Xiali (+37.4%) ranks #2 again and vastly outpaces the market. The Yuejin NJ1041/1061 (+80.8%) surges five spots to #3 with the BAW BJ2020/BJ6400 down one to #4. The Foton Forland (+105.7%) and FAW Tianjin Hijet (+66.2%) also post tremendous gains.
