The Indian new vehicle market continues on its record run with a 17% year-on-year gain to 340.789 deliveries in 1994. Brand leader Maruti flies just below the radar at +15% to a slightly decreased but still ultra-dominant 48% market share, whereas Tata soars 43% to snap its very first 2nd place finish at 13.9% share off the hands of Mahindra (+6%) down to 13.7%. Hindustan (-2%) resists the return of Premier (+24%) just as Force Motors (+27%) continues to outpace its home market to a record 7.1% share in 6th place.

The Maruti 800 (+18%) celebrates 10 consecutive years atop the Indian sales charts by crossing both the 100.000 annual sales milestone for the first time – the first nameplate to ever do so in India – and breaking the 30% share barrier also for the first time at 30.2%. In fact, the entire Top 8 models are unchanged on 1993, with the Mahindra Jeep (+4%), Maruti Omnivan (+7%), Tata 407/608/609 (+34%) and Hindustan Ambassador (-3%) completing the Top 5. The Tata Estate/Sierra (+91%) breaks into the Top 10 at #9, helping the brand to #2 this year.
