World 1984-1989: Toyota Corolla estimated to resume domination

1983 Toyota Corolla

After an interruption by the Ford Escort in 1983, the Toyota Corolla is estimated to have resumed its domination over world car sales for the remainder of the eighties. Two generations of the Corolla are on sale over the period: the fifth generation (or E80) launched in May 1983, and the sixth generation (E90) from May 1987. The only official figures we have related to worldwide sales of French models in 1987 when the Renault Supercinq led the way ahead of the Peugeot 205 and Renault 21. If you have any official world sales data by model over the period please contact us here.
