In 1986 and for the first time since 1981, Ford monopolises the podium, and does so again in 1987. The 3 best selling cars in Britain stay the same over the period. The Ford Escort is UK’s best seller for the fifth and sixth year in a row, reaching a best ever 178,001 sales in 1987. The Ford Fiesta MKII is up one spot to #2, passing the 150,000 mark for the first time in 1987 with what remains to this date its highest ever annual volume at 153,453 units, and the Ford Sierra re-enters the podium at #3 both years.

The Austin Metro and Vauxhall Cavalier exchange positions at #4 and #5, the Vauxhall Astra is stable at #6 and the Austin Montego stays in the Top 8. Two models appear in the Top 10 for the first time, both in 1987: the Rover 200 is 9th that year, and the Peugeot 205 is #10 and best selling foreign model.
