France 1964: Citroen back above Renault, 2 CV teases R4 for 1st place
Renault 4 La Parisienne
After crossing the million annual unit-milestone in 1963, the French new vehicle market consolidates in 1964, with sales of domestic models (incl. MCV) edging down -1.1% to 1,068,022 units. Citroen (+9%) overtakes Renault (-13.1%) to claim the brands pole position for the first time since 1961. Peugeot (+1.1%) and Simca (-1.8%) follow, both above 150,000 units like last year. Panhard (+5.7%) defies the negative market in 5th place.
The Citroen 2 CV ends the year 6,000 sales below the Renault 4.
Model-wise, the Renault 4 (-6.3%) stays on top but falls faster than the market to 12.4% share. 6,000 sales below we have the Citroen 2 CV (+1.7%) back up one spot to #2. The Peugeot 404 (+8.2%) is also up one rank to #3, both models benefitting from a slump by the Renault 8 (-15.6%). The Citroen Ami 6 (+19.2%) continues to gear up at #5 ahead of the Simca 1300 (+87%) up three spots to #6. Simca also places the 1000 at #8 (-29.1%) and the 1500 at #10 (+518.3%).
