Mexican new car sales continue on their excellent run, up 11% year-on-year in July to 76,376 registrations which brings the year-to-date total to 538,615 units, up 12% on 2011. The top of the models ranking stays relatively stable: the Chevrolet Aveo confirms (if need be) it is the new Boss of the Mexican market by celebrating its 8th consecutive month in pole position thanks to 4,221 sales and 5.5% market share, ahead of the Nissan Versa very solid at #2 with 3,497 units and 4.6%.

The VW Clasico rounds up the podium like last month with 3,222 sales and 4.2% while the Nissan Tiida Sedan (#4) and Nissan Tsuru (#5) swap positions. The Nissan March is in great shape this month, up 2 spots on June to #7 and 3% share but the big event in July in Mexico is the arrival of the new Chevrolet Sonic within the monthly Top 10 at a brilliant 9th place with 2,041 units and 2.7% share, a good performance given its relatively high price.

The Mexican car market is on fire this year: up another 15% year-on-year in June to 78,508 registrations, bringing the year-to-date total to 462,239 units, up 11% on 2011. The Chevrolet Aveo enjoys its 7th consecutive month in pole position like a Boss with 4,861 sales and 6.2%, its highest market share ever in the country again, equalling its performance from last month.

The Nissan Versa also consolidate its 2nd place in June with 3,814 units and 4.9% share, slightly over its 2012 level at 4.7%. In third position we find last year’s leader the VW Clasico at 3,392 sales and 4.3%, followed the Nissan Tsuru getting a (last?) kick, up 3 spots on last month to #4 with 3,096 units and 3.9%. Notice also the VW Nuevo Jetta up 3 ranks to #6 and the Nissan March up one to #9.

Mexican car sales are up a massive 28% year-on-year in March to 83,574 registrations, bringing the year-to-date total to 233,574 units, up 11% on 2011. The Chevrolet Aveo confirms it is the country’s new favourite car after the VW Clasico put a stop to 8 consecutive years of Nissan Tsuru domination last year, selling 4,815 units to rank first for the 4th month in a row. Year-to-date it is at 13,275 sales and 5.7% share, up 58% year-on-year.

Mexico February 2012: Chevrolet Aveo cements leadership

Chevrolet Aveo

Mexican car sales confirm they are starting the year in the best of shapes (the best in 4 years actually), up 11% in February at 74,704 registrations, bringing the year-to-date total to 150,000 units exactly, up 10% on 2011. After the VW Clasico put a stop to 8 consecutive years of Nissan Tsuru domination last year, 2012 could well be the year of yet another leadership change: the Chevrolet Aveo tops the models ranking for the third consecutive month in February and improves its market share again to a record 6% thanks to 4,502 sales.

This is the ‘low cost effect’ that benefitted the VW Clasico last year: while its successor the Sonic is now in dealerships, the Aveo stays available at a reduced price and sees its sales take off. Year-to-date, the Aveo already has a 2,000 sales advantage over the Tsuru at 8,460 units (+48%) vs. 6,455 (-38%).

Honda CR-V

3 Nissans follow: equalling its best ranking ever, the new Versa excels this month with 3,789 sales and 5.1%, ahead of the Tsuru at 4.4% and the Tiida sedan at 3.7%. The VW Clasico recovers partly from an horrific month of January, back up to #5 at 3.4% but still down 54% on 2011 year-to-date. Outstanding hold of the new generation Honda CR-V in 6th position at 2,476 units and 3.3%, that’s almost 3 times better than in February 2011…

Very healthy start of the year for the Mexican car market, up 9% on January 2011 to 75,297 registrations. The Chevrolet Aveo holds onto the pole position it acquired in December, delivering 3,958 sales for an outstanding 5.3% market share and positioning itself as a serious contender for the 2012 #1 spot.

Honda CR-V

The Nissan Tsuru comes 2nd at 3,155 units and 4.2%, down 41% year-on-year, followed by the Nissan Tiida and 3.7% and -34% and the Nissan Versa with 2,497 sales and 3.3%. Exceptional performance of the Honda CR-V, up to a shiny 5th place thanks to 2,353 units sold, up a massive 189% year-on-year thanks to the new generation now in dealerships.

Other great performers this month include the Chevrolet Spark up to #7 with 2,097 sales and 2.8% and the VW Gol up to 9th place at 1,852 units and 2.5%. Notice 2011′s best-seller, the VW Clasico, down a worrying 57% yeear-on-year to #10.

Car sales in Mexico are up a healthy 10% both in December at 115,696 units and in the Full Year 2011 at 905,886 registrations, the best figure in 3 years. A once in a decade event happened this year in the Mexican models ranking: the market changed leaders!

Transformed into VW’s low-cost option with the arrival of the new generation Jetta in late 2010, the VW Clasico which is in fact a restyled 1998 Jetta/Bora, managed to break 8 consecutive years of Nissan Tsuru reign to snap up the pole position in 2011. It lead the Mexican market 7 times this year vs. 4 for the Tsuru and sells 57,782 units, up 40% at 6.4% share vs. 55,741, down 9% at 6.2% for the Tsuru.

Nissan Versa

The Nissan Tiida Sedan stays #3 with sales up 2 to 39,083 units and 4.3%, followed by the Chevrolet Aveo up 26% to 36,972 units and 4.1%. There are two more Nissans in the Top 10 vs. 2010, bringing that number to an outstanding 6! The Nissan Versa lands directly at #8 with 20,894 sales and 2.3%, it peaked at #2 and 5.3% share in October. The Nissan March arrives in 10th place at 18,995 units and 2.1% and peaked at #6 in December.

Chevrolet Aveo

In December, a third model is claiming a right to the Mexican throne: the Chevrolet Aveo. Still on sale despite the arrival of the Sonic, the Aveo could very well benefit in 2012 from the ‘low-cost’ effect the VW Clasico enjoyed this year… The Aveo sells 5,307 units in December and ranks #1 for the first time in the nameplate’s history in the country. Other December performers include the Nissan March up to #6 and the Ford Escape up to #11.
