The Iraqi new car market confirms it is on the mend in 2017 with August sales up 26% to 2.612 units, leading to a year-to-date total up 15% to 21.755. Market leaders Kia (+61%) and Toyota (+89%) pull the market up and add up to an ultra-dominant 79.3% market share this month vs. 68.8% so far in 2017. It would appear that Nissan, still #3 year-to-date with 13.3% share, has interrupted sales in Iraq. Chevrolet (-38%), Hyundai (-68%) and Suzuki (+1580%) round up the Top 5 with GMC (+390%), Land Rover (+65%) and BMW (+28%) also posting spectacular gains.
The Kia Frontier remains by far the most popular nameplate in Iraq, selling more than double any other model on sale in the country, but slows down its growth at +56% to 27.7% share in August vs. 32.1% (+104%) year-to-date. The Toyota Hilux is up one spot on its FY2016 ranking to #2 overall thanks to deliveries up a whopping 87% this month. It knocks the Kia Sportage (+56%) down to #3. The Toyota Land Cruiser Pickup surges up 7-fold on August 2016 to land in 4th place overall, above the Chevrolet Cobalt up to #5 vs. #16 year-to-date. The Kia Sorento (+256%), Toyota Prado (+125%) and Suzuki Swift Dzire (+1120%) also shine in the Top 10.
