India September 2016: Maruti breaks record in market up 20%

The Indian new car market shows excellent health in September with wholesale deliveries up a stunning 20% year-on-year to 277.540, lifting the year-to-date tally up 10% to 2.207.993 after 9 months. Local carmaker Maruti-Suzuki outpaces the fast-running market at +29% to break its all-time volume record this month to 137.277 units, achieving a mammoth 49.5% market share. It seems everything Maruti launches turns into gold at the moment. Atop the overall models ranking, the Alto is up a whopping 34% to 27.750, while the DZire (-4%) and Swift (-8%) declines are more than compensated by the success of the Baleno breaking its volume record this month at 10.623 in 6th place (previous best: 10.572 in December 2015).

The Wagon R also hits an all-time high volume at 16.645 (previous best: 15.540 in July 2015) and the Vitara Brezza holds onto its title of #1 SUV at 9.375 sales just above the Creta. The Omni (+3%), Ciaz (+53%), Eeco (+26%) and Ertiga (+144%) are all in various degrees of positive and all fit within the Top 15, making it 10 Marutis in the Top 15. Hyundai is solid in 2nd place in the brands ranking with 15.4% share and the Creta (+21%) going strong but the Elite i20 (-12%) struggling.

Mahindra is up 5% in third place, followed by freefalling Honda (-19%) while Tata gains 24% thanks to the Tiago (#19). Thanks to the Kwid lodging a second consecutive month above 10.000 monthly units, Renault shoots up 582% year-on-year to #6 brand overall with 12.143 sales, distancing Toyota at 12.067 (+6%) boosted by the Innova Crysta (+34%). Helped by the Ecosport (+41%), Ford gains 9% at #8, Datsun is up 3-fold on its September 2015 score thanks to the RediGO however losing ground already (-19% on August) while for Volkswagen (+22%), the Ameo effect is already fading out (-39% on last month).
