April Portugal sales, putting an end to 34 consecutive months of double-digit year-on-year gain, turned out to be a freak event: May registrations are back up 14% to 20.851 units, lifting the year-to-date total up 20% to 95.255. Renault remains the uncontested brand leader with 12.7% share while Peugeot (+14%) overtakes Volkswagen (+5%) and Opel (+32%) passes both BMW (+23%) and Mercedes (+19%). Fiat (+65%), Toyota (+53%), Kia (+36%), Hyundai (+48%), Mini (+57%), Mazda (+75%), Honda (+52%) and Jaguar (+289%) frankly outpace the market. Model-wise, the Renault Clio holds tight onto its leadership with 5.3% share, distancing the VW Polo (+19%) and Renault Mégane up 54% thanks to the new generation to #3, the Peugeot 208 up 64% to #4 and the Opel Astra up 75% to #5. Other great performers include the Mercedes A-Class up 56% to #10, Seat Leon up 55% to #18, BMW 2 Series up 165% to #21 and Fiat 500X up 194% to #31. The Renault Talisman brilliantly leads new launches, up 67 spots on April to #61 and 92 sales above the Honda HR-V (#65), Opel Karl (#67) and Fiat Tipo (#77).
