Incredible sales figures keep coming through from the Czech Republic, and the good news is the re-exports seem to be levelling off, indicating ‘real’ sales gains this year. After March (22.799) and April (23.131), May marks the third consecutive all-time absolute monthly record for new car sales in the country at 24.335, up a mammoth 34% on May 2015 and lifting the year-to-date total up 16% to 107.064. This also means each month in 2016 has been the highest ever score in history for that month. Local fare Skoda grows as fast as the record-breaking market with volumes up 34% to 7.768 and 31.9%, and this time both Volkswagen (+40%) and Hyundai (+42%) outpace it, as do Kia (+36%), Dacia (+41%), Seat (+49%) and Renault (+60%). Outside the Top 10, both Suzuki and Honda double their sales thanks to the Vitara and HR-V respectively. In this euphoric context, Alfa Romeo, Fiat and Opel are the only marques to lose ground year-on-year. Model-wise, the Top 4 is 100% Skoda (Octavia-Fabia-Superb-Rapid) with the Yeti added at #6 for good measure. The locally-produced Hyundai i30 is the most popular ‘foreign’ model, followed by the VW Golf (#7) and Passat (#8) with the Hyundai ix20 reappearing inside the Top 10. The Ford Edge lands at #168.
