Tonga Full Year 2014: Toyota Hilux holds just under 40% of tiny market

This is the first of a series of BSCB exclusive Full Year 2014 updates on smaller southern Pacific Ocean countries and territories that have never been covered before on this site, courtesy of Toyota. Tonga is a Polynesian archipelago composed of 177 islands – 52 of which are inhabited, spread over 700.000 km2 (270.000 sq mi). 70% of the total 103.000 population of Tonga lives on the main island of Tongatapu. Tonga stretches over about 800 km (500 mi) in a north-south line, about a third of the distance from New Zealand to Hawaii. See exact location on the map below.

The Tongan new car market is among the smallest in the world, with just 51 new light vehicles finding a buyer over the Full Year 2014. Of these, 40 were Toyotas, 6 were Nissan and 5 Hyundai. And off all Toyotas sold in Tonga in 2014, 20 were Toyota Hilux, making the pickup the best-selling new vehicle in Tonga this year with a mammoth 39.2% market share. Other strong Toyota sellers on the archipelago include the Hiace and RAV4.
