Colombia Full Year 2014: Chevrolet Sail tops record market

Thanks to registrations up a solid 12% on 2013, the Colombian new vehicle market hits a new all-time record in 2014 at 328.529 units, edging past the previous record of 2011 (324.570). Chevrolet remains the most popular manufacturer in the country but sees its market share thaw a bit to 25.2% with sales up 8%. The American manufacturer is followed by Renault up 16%, Kia up 11% and Ford up 24%. Nissan (+5%), Hyundai (-6%) and Toyota (-4%) all lose market share this year, while Suzuki shoots up 73% to break into the annual Top 10 at #10.

JAC remains the best-selling Chinese carmaker in Colombia despite sales down 20% at #13, but is now threatened by Foton at #14 (+57%) and Dongfeng at #15 (+40%). Model-wise, the Chevrolet Sail lodges a second consecutive year atop the ranking thanks to sales up 21% to 20.515 units, with the Renault Sandero (+17%) remaining 2nd. The Chevrolet Spark GT (+42%) is up 4 spots to land on the last step of the podium, while the Renault Duster (+26%), Kia Picanto/Eko (+21%) and Ford Fiesta (+54%) also perform well within the Top 10.

Notice the Renault Clio up 62% to 311, the Kia Rio Spice up 34% to #18, the Ford Ecosport up 54% to #26, Suzuki Swift up 186% to #32 and the Mazda CX-5 doubling its sales year-on-year to #35. Even though it is called Chevrolet N300 in Colombia, the Wuling Rongguang is the best-selling Chinese vehicle in the country once again in 2014 thanks to 3.586 sales at #22, followed by the Chery Van/Y380 at #36, Chery Tiggo at #43 and Dongfeng C37/V25/V29 van at #44.
Another specificity of the Colombian new car market is the fact that taxis are sold under different nameplates. The best-seller in this segment is the Hyundai City (aka i10) with 5.465 sales ahead of the Kia Eko (aka Picanto) at 3.841, Hyundai Super Pony (aka Accent) at 1.346, Chevrolet Chronos (aka Spark) at 925 and JAC HFC (aka J5) at 835. Colombia is the only country in the world to use these nameplates.
