It’s officially recession time in Turkey, with new car sales crashing down a very painful 29% year-on-year in May to just 58,121 registrations, bringing the year-to-date total to 226,698 units, down 26% on 2013. For the first time since last July, the Fiat Linea (leader over the Full Year 2012 and 2013) is the most popular vehicle in the country, and by a large margin with 2,923 sales and 5% share vs. 1,918 and 3.3% for the Renault Fluence which however remains #1 so far in 2014 for now at 9,454 units and 4.2% vs. 9,096 and 4%. If the Linea continues on this sales trend it will overtake the Fluence in the year-to-date ranking next month.
The VW Polo is very regular in third place both this month and year-to-date but is now threatened by the Toyota Corolla boosted by the new model and up a further two spots on April to #4 with 1,724 sales and 3% vs. #10 year-to-date and #15 in 2013. The Ford Focus sedan also shines at #7, as do the Opel Corsa at #11, the Skoda Octavia up 21 spots to #18, the Ford Courier up a huge 145 ranks to #20 thanks to the new model, the VW Tiguan up 12 to #23 and Mercedes C-Class up 29 to #31.
