Germany May 2014: Seat Leon shoots up to record 13th place

The German new car market is back into positive in May at +5% year-on-year to 274,804 registrations, bringing the year-to-date total to 1,260,654 units, up 3% on 2013. Below the VW Golf at 7.3% share, the VW Passat is back up 2 spots on April to reclaims the #2 ranking both this month and year-to-date, overtaking the VW Tiguan. The Audi A3 remains on the podium thanks to sales up 23% on May 2013 to 6,161 and passes the VW Polo year-to-date to now rank #4. The Opel Astra is up a spectacular 9 ranks on last month and vs. its year-to-date ranking to #6 and 5,219 units with the Ford Focus up 4 to #7 and the Skoda Octavia up 47% year-on-year to #9.
It’s very rare these days that the Opel Astra performs at home – so let’s salute it when it happens.
But the biggest achievement of the month is without a doubt achieved by the Seat Leon: up 9 spots on April and 55% year-on-year to hit an all-time high 13th spot with 4,328 sales and 2.2% share, smashing its previous ranking record of #19 from last March. The VW Up is up 7 ranks to #14 and amazingly overtakes the VW Polo down 10 to a paltry #16. The Fiat Ducato continues to shine thanks to campervan sales at #23, the Fiat 500 is up 31% to #26, the Ford Kuga up 63% to #31, Opel Insignia up 54% to #32, Renault Clio up 45% to #36 and the Dacia Duster up 43% to #49.
First appearance inside the German Top 200 for the BMW X4 this month.
Among recent launches, the Mercedes GLA is down 9 spots to #57, the BMW 4 Series down 12 to #58, the Porsche Macan down 8 to #106, the Mercedes V-Class up 119 to #123, BMW 2 Series down 4 to #137, Ford Ecosport up 86 to #151, BMW X4 up 96 to #174 and BMW i8 up 22 to #264.
Brand-wise, below Volkswagen regular at 21.1% share, Mercedes is back to the #2 spot it holds year-to-date with 24,327 sales and 8.9%, overtaking Audi at 8.8% while Opel (7.7%) and Ford (7.4%) pass BMW to rank #4 and #5 respectively. Skoda is up 23% to #7, Seat up 16% to #8, Renault up 33% to #9, Citroen up 22%, Nissan up 37%, Mazda up 27%, Volvo up 30%, Infiniti up 641% and Maserati up 203%.
