Uruguay April 2014: BYD passes Chery to #1 Chinese carmaker
BYD markets the L3 as the ‘New F3’ in Uruguay.

New car sales in Uruguay may have plateaued for a bit: they are down 2% year-on-year in April to 4,281 registrations, however the year-to-date total is still up 2% on 2013 to a record 17,140 units. Chevrolet remains the most popular carmaker in the country with 511 sales and 11.9% share, slightly below its 2014 level (12.5%) while Fiat lodges a second consecutive month in 2nd position above Volkswagen (10.2% share vs. 9.5%) but remains below the German manufacturer year-to-date (8.6% vs. 9.4%). Nissan is up one spot on March to #4 and Hyundai up two to #5.
Chevrolet remains the most popular carmaker in Uruguay.
Jumping from #11 and #3 Chinese in March to #8 and #1 Chinese in April is BYD with 220 sales and 5.1%, two units above Chery in 9th place. Notice also Mitsubishi shooting up from #27 to #11 potentially thanks to the arrival of the Mirage and Chana up 11 spots to #20. Chinese manufacturers are down to 21.1% of the market in April after holding 26.4% in February, but their year-to-date share still stands at an incredible 24.9% so far vs. 23.3% in 2013 and 19.5% in 2012.
