Building on a record year in 2013, the Uruguayan new car market is up 17% year-on-year in February to 4,588 registrations, bringing the year-to-date total after two months to 8,768 units, up 7% on 2013. Once again the main piece of news in Uruguay is the strength of Chinese carmakers. Already holding a world-best (outside China) 23.3% market share over the Full Year 2013, they improve this score to 26.4% so far in 2014! Brilliantly illustrating this trend, Chery shoots up to 2nd place overall in February thanks to 425 sales and 9.3% share, an all-time record for the brand in Uruguay! Only Chevrolet at 504 units and 11% manages to sell more, and that’s a particularly weak market share for the US manufacturer… Chinese performances can also be seen further down the ranking: BYD is up to #9 and 5.2% in February vs. #15 and 2% over the Full Year 2013, FAW ranks 11th vs. 10th, Geely is #14 vs. #13, Great Wall #15 vs. #16, Lifan #17 vs. #18 and JAC #18 vs. #20.
