New car sales in Portugal enjoy their 7th consecutive month of year-on-year growth in January, and once again we are talking about a very sizeable gain: up 32% to 9,260 registrations. More than ever German premium brands are en vogue here, and in actual fact we are witnessing a historical event this month in Portugal: BMW becomes the most popular brand in the country thanks to 947 sales and 10.2%, beating Renault (902 units), Volkswagen (901) and Peugeot (880) while Mercedes is up to a huge 9.2% share with 852 sales at #5 and Audi up to 7.1% thanks to 656 units sold at #6… All in all, the 3 German premium brands hold a gigantic 26.5% market share in January in Portugal!
This is reflected in the models ranking: below the Renault Clio (4.8% share), VW Golf (4.4%) and Peugeot 208 (3.9%) we find the Mercedes A-Class up to a best-ever 4th place thanks to 350 sales and 3.8% share! Then we have the BMW 3 Series at #5 and 3.7%, the BMW 1 Series at #6 and 3% and the Audi A3 at #7 and 2.5%!
Other great performers in Portugal this month include the Mercedes E-Class up to #12 vs. #28 over the Full Year 2013, the BMW 5 Series up 29 spots on December to #15, the Peugeot 2008 at #18, Seat Leon at #25, Dacia Logan at #38, Mercedes CLA up 15 to #39, Range Rover Evoque up 17 to #41 and the BMW 4 Series breaking into the Top 50 for the first time in any European country at #48 with 53 sales and 0.6%.
