Thanks to Marcelo de Vasconcellos, I can share with you today the list of the 10 most popular nameplate in the history of automobile in Brazil. And the #1 is not the VW Beetle (called Fusca locally)… it is the VW Gol, originally launched in 1980 and best-seller in the country each and every year since 1987 with the exception of 1994 (Fiat Uno). The Gol is considered the quintessential Brazilian car, manufactured locally to closely fit the country’s needs. More than one million Gol have been exported to 66 countries, making the total production for the model since launch 7.2 million. Logically, the Gol is also the most stolen car in Brazil!
The VW Fusca was the best-seller in Brazil from 1954 to 1980
The Fiat Uno follows in second place with 3.2 million units sold since 1984. When Fiat launched the Palio in 1996 (#4 in this ranking with 2.5 million units sold), it had planned to cancel the Uno but opted to keep going, a wise decision indeed. A completely remodelled Novo Uno launched in 2011 with great success, outselling the Palio for a couple of years. The VW Fusca arrives in third position with 3 million units sold locally between 1954 and 1996, topping the Brazilian sales charts for 27 consecutive years between 1954 and 1980, one more year than the VW Gol! Notice also the Chevrolet Chevette at #6 and the Ford Corcel at #8.
