The Indonesian new car market is still booming: after breaking the symbolic 1 million annual sale milestone for the first time in 2012, it is up a further 10% in 2013 to reach a record-setting 1,226,199 registrations. This is the 4th consecutive all-time record year for new car sales in Indonesia after 2010 (764,710), 2011 (894,180) and 2012 (1,116,224). It means Indonesia is still the 14th biggest car market in the world but its deficit over Italy (#13) has thawed from almost 300,000 units in 2012 to less than 85,000 this year… In fact, in 2013 the all-time Indonesia monthly volume record was beaten twice: in July (112,183) and September (115,974).
This performance is all the more impressive when you take into account that in 2013 the local currency has depreciated about 27% against the US dollar, increasing production costs of cars with imported components, and the benchmark interest rate has been raised from 5.75% to 7.50% between June and November, impacting the car market given 75% of Indonesian car buyers use a loan for the purchase. These elements have been counterbalanced by the introduction of the low cost green car (LCGC) with a price tag of around USD8,200. The main event in the models ranking this year indeed is the thunderous arrival of the twins Toyota Agya, #13 overall but #2 in November and December, and Daihatsu Ayla, #16 over the full year but up to #4 over the last two months of the year…
Suzuki Ertiga sales are up a whopping 86% year-on-year in 2013.
Atop the models sales charts, the Toyota Avanza still reigns supreme and unlocks its 8th consecutive year in pole position thanks to sales growing faster than the market at +11% to a record 213,458 units and 17.5% share, the first time any single model manages to sell over 200,000 units in a single year in Indonesia. Its twin the Daihatsu Xenia holds onto its 2nd place, but just: down a harsh 12% to 64,611 sales and 5.3% it is only 72 units above the Toyota Kijang Innova down 10% to 64,539. Excellent operation of the Suzuki Ertiga, up a huge 86% on 2012 to land in 4th position with 63,317 sales and 5.2% for its first full year in market.
The Daihatsu Gran Max Pick-up is up 27% in 2013.
Other great performers this year in Indonesia include the Daihatsu Gran Max Pick-up up 27% to #5, the Mitsubishi T120 SS Pick-up up 14% to #9, Honda Jazz up 31% to #10, Honda CR-V up 38% to #14 and the Suzuki APV Pick-up up 24% to #15. Perspectives for 2014 are still sunny: in spite of an expected price raise by Toyota to compensate for increased production costs due to the depreciated rupiah, the market is expected to grow between 5 and 10% to pass 1.3 million units this year. One reason being the legislative and presidential elections which are expected to generate USD3.6 billion of funds flowing on the domestic market, part of which will be used to buy cars.
