Diwali is always a fruitful time of the year for car sales as lots of consumers wait until the auspicious season to make their purchase. As a result October is the strongest month of the 2013 fiscal year so far (starting in April) at 229,057 registrations, down just 1% year-on-year and bringing the calendar year-to-date total to 2,062,740 units, down 7% on 2013. The Top 4 most popular models stay unchanged vs. last month and are still 100% Maruti: the Alto leads once again thanks to 22,574 sales, followed by the Swift (19,047), DZire (17,211) and Wagon R (14,270). The Dzire remain #2 year-to-date though.
It’s below that things get interesting: for only its third month in market, the Hyundai Grand i10 manages to break the symbolic 10,000 monthly sales-barrier at 11,519 and 5% share, the strongest volume achieved by any Hyundai since the Eon sold 12,500 units back in March 2012. It also pushes Hyundai to its third best-ever monthly result behind February and March 2012 at 36,002 units.
But wait there’s more: the Honda Amaze can’t stop amazing, up 43% on a record month of September to lodge an all-time high 9,564 sales and 4.2% share, by far the highest monthly volume any Honda ever reached in India. The Maruti Ertiga is back up 17 spots on last month to lodge its third best ever month and best since November 2012 at 7,224 sales, the Ford Ecosport is down 6 spots to #15 as the waiting list now reaches 12 months and we welcome an all-new model in the ranking: the Nissan Terrano, a rebadged Renault Duster, lands directly at #22 with 3,079 sales vs. #16 and 4,657 this month for the Duster…
