Over the first week of October, the new car market in France is surprisingly up 2% year-on-year, with Peugeot leading the brands ranking ahead of Citroen and Renault, while all 3 German premium manufacturers fit inside the Top 10: Audi at #6, Mercedes at #8 (+57%!) and BMW at #10 (+14%). As always it is essential to take these weekly results with a grain of salt as they are highly influenced by temporary promotions and how each manufacturer manages their month – Renault backloading sales for example.
As a result it’s no surprise to see the Peugeot 208 leading the models ranking even though its sales are down 9% to 1,313 units, followed by the Citroen C3 (-15%) and Renault Clio IV. The vehicles that make themselves noticed over the period are the VW Polo up to #4 with 762 sales, the Citroen C4 Picasso II in 5th position at 631 units, the Toyota Yaris at #6 and 612 sales and the Peugeot 2008 back inside the weekly Top 10 at #8 and 555 units while the Renault Captur is outside it. Notice also the Fiat 500 up 40% year-on-year but 46% of its total are short-term rentals, which Auto Plus Magazine calls ‘fake sales’…
