Over the first week of September, 26,062 new cars found a buyer in France, down just 1% on 2012, however this score was biased by a very unique event: the unlocking of registrations for Mercedes A, B and CLA Class which were prevented by the French government because of their usage of a recently banned air conditioning cooling gas. At the end of August, Mercedes won the right to deliver these models to customers and as a result the backlog of the entire summer now appears on the records: the Mercedes A Class is up 520% year-on-year to #5 with 690 sales and 2.6% which is probably the best-ever weekly ranking for a Mercedes in France, while the B Class is up 140% to #9 at 520 units and 2.1%, artificially pushing Mercedes up to #5 brand this week at 6.9% share…

In other news, note the Peugeot 208 down a harsh 34% year-on-year but still #1 for now at 4% share, the VW Golf VII up to an outstanding 2nd place at 3.2% share ahead of the Renault Clio IV at 3% but this will change as we get towards the end of the month as Renault sales are always back-ended. The VW Polo is back up to #6, the Toyota Yaris up to #7, making it 5 foreigners in the Top 9 this week and the Citroen C4 Picasso II ranks at an encouraging #8 while its archenemy the Renault Scenic is outside the Top 10.
