As is the tradition, after exploring in detail July sales in the US, we look into the year-to-date models ranking to extract longer-term trends. We are dealing with a euphoric new light vehicle market in the US this year, up 8.5% on 2012 to 9,144,335 units. As we have studied earlier, pick-up trucks are pulling the entire market up and this is very clear when you look at YTD year-on-year evolutions: the Chevrolet Silverado is up 27% at #2, the Dodge Ram (#5) and GMC Sierra (#20) are both up 24% and the Ford F-Series is up 22%. The other vehicles delivering 20%+ gains inside the Top 40 are the Hyundai Elantra at +29% (#14), Ford Explorer at +24% (#19), Chevrolet Cruze at +23% (#12), Toyota Tacoma at +21% (#26) and Ford Escape at +20% (#10)...
When we widen the net to the Top 100, noticeable improvements include the Nissan Pathfinder up 208% to #52, Toyota Avalon up 135% to #69, Acura RDX up 87% to #95, Lexus ES up 80% to #71, Subaru Forester up 39% to #48, Dodge Durango up 38% to #77 and Jeep Compass up 30% to #79. The Dodge Dart is up 5132% year-on-year but was launched around the same time last year which messes up the comparison. At #56 it is a disappointment so far. The only all-new model inside the US Top 100 over the period is once again the Subaru XV Crosstrek at #82, with the Ford C-Max at #106 and Cadillac ATS #108 the next best things.
Interesting developments further down the US ranking: the Nissan Leaf up 230% to #145 and passing the Chevrolet Volt in the process at #146 (+9%), the Audi Q7 up 48% whereas there was no new model in store, the Range Rover up 39%, Hyundai Azera up 62%, Mercedes SL Class up 113%, Porsche Boxster up 216%, Porsche Cayman up 333% and the Mercedes G Class up 186%.
