Brazil June 2013: Chevrolet Onix and Hyundai HB20 pause

Is Brazil getting contaminated by the European doom and gloom? New car sales in one of the (usually) fastest-growing markets in the world are down a shocking 12% year-on-year in June to 302,896 registrations. Halfway through the year however, we are still at record levels with 1,707,814 units, up 5% on 2012. The 2nd half of 2013 will determine whether Brazilian growth has come to a halt and will be extremely interesting to follow indeed. After a couple of wild months, the models ranking is back to its traditional stability in Brazil. The VW Gol dominates at 7.4% share, ahead of the Fiat Uno and Palio and the VW Fox, exactly reflecting the year-to-date ranking.

Hyundai HB20S Brazil June 2013Has the Hyundai HB20/HB20S tandem already peaked out?

The Ford Fiesta is down one spot on May but improves its share to an excellent 4.3% thanks to 12,995 sales. But the significant event this month in Brazil is the plateauing (some could say deflating) of this year's two superstars: the Chevrolet Onix is up one rank on last month to #7 but down to 3.2% share vs. 3.4% year-to-date, while the Hyundai HB20 drops out of the Top 10 at #11 and 2.8% vs. 3.6% year-to-date, bringing it down from #4 to #6 so far in 2013. Have these two models already shown their full sales potential in Brazil or is this just a pause and the growth will resume shortly? My bet is on the first option, unless this pause is due to production capacities not following the demand. If you have more info on this, please comment on here!

The other interesting fact is that the sedan versions of these models are behaving differently: on one hand the Chevrolet Prisma continues to improve, up to 1.9% share at #14 but on the other hand the Hyundai HB20S is already down 2 spots to #24 and 1.2% share for its 2nd full month of sales in the country... Seems like contrary to what their early careers indicated, Chevrolet turns out to have pulled out a more successful tandem than Hyundai.

    Bacana! Luis is saying that the old Fiesta and the new Fiesta plit the 12k in sales. This is very good News for Ford! If people are really willing to pay all the extra for the new model, Ford will make a bundle. I went to see it at the dealership and they were overcharging Ford’s list price by 4000 reais (almost 2000 USD)! This is a sign that the model has been well received. Of course, the initial enthusiasm will abate, but it’s a fine indication.

    Ford’s been on a tear in Brazil of late, EcoSport, Fusion, now Fiesta have increased foot traffic at Ford dealers and really improved the desirability of the cars in Brazilians’ eyes. If they can transition well from old Fiesta to new Fiesta and the new Ka is a hot, they could well be catching up with the Bigger 3 soon, or, at the very least, avoid Renault leapfrogging them

    Matt, to answer your question, the numbers of both hatches have plataued for now in part, due to friendly fire, some look at the hatch,buy the sedan and vice versa. In Chevy’s case there’s even the Cobalt, directly competing with Prisma. Due to many factors, tradition, penetration, novelty wearing off and reality catching up with overblown expectation (the last two relative to Hyundai) it was always absolutely clear the Onix family would be more successful in the short and mid run than the HB family.

    As to drop in sales, for now it has more to do with the unrest than anything else. In my city aKia and a Hyundai dealership have been knocked out for a while. The momemt is difficult but could well be temporary, ‘crossing fingers’.

    It’s all about pricing. Fox had a special stock clearing as they just launched it with the all new 3 cylinder 1.0, so the old ones with the 4 cylinder was on fire sale. Same explains the Fiesta. The sales are he best in such a long time cause they were being sold at 50% down, the balance no interest in 48 months. Fiat reacted cause they did the same, but only 36 months. Remains to be seen future new fiesta price positioning and future of Fiesta Rocam.

    Onix is selling well with little rebate, and I start seeing first rebates for HB20. toyota pushing hard Etios with little success.

    Remember, Brazilians want price and low intersrt. Those are keys to sales success.
