As in neighbouring Australia, the New Zealand new car market is euphoric in 2013 so far. Commercial vehicle registrations deliver their strongest June figure since 1982 at 3,181 units while Passenger Cars are at their highest since 2005 at 7,541. Overall the market is up 6% to 10,722 units and the year-to-date total now stands at 54,471 sales, up a very healthy 9% on 2012. According to Motor Industry Association Director David Crawford, “this reflects the strong housing market in Auckland and the Christchurch rebuild (after last year’s devastating earthquake), providing business confidence to the trade sector.”
Replicating its fantastic success in Australia, the Toyota Hilux leads this month’s models ranking in New Zealand thanks to 665 sales and 6.2% share, which even enables it to pass the Toyota Corolla in the year-to-date ranking and become the best-selling vehicle in the country so far in 2012 at 2,450 units and 4.5% vs. 2,424 and 4.4% for the Corolla. Notice also the Toyota RAV4 up 3 spots on May to a shiny 4th position and the Hyundai Santa Fe very strong again at #5.
Further down, the Mazda BT-50 is up 8 ranks to #11, the Mitsubishi Triton up 5 to #12, the Hyundai i30 up 8 to #14 and the Holden Malibu makes its very first appearance in the New Zealand monthly ranking at #24 with 130 sales and 1.2% share.
