The situation is getting frankly worse as the months go by for Japanese new Passenger Car sales, down 16% year-on-year in June to 266,913 registrations in spite of imports up 14%. The year-to-date total is now down 12% on 2012 halfway through the year at 1,641,032 units. Thanks to a third consecutive month atop the sales charts and 21,809 sales in June, the Toyota Prius is now leads the 2013 year-to-date ranking for the first time at 132,462 units, however its advantage over the Aqua is only 126 sales! With the Prius down 23% in June vs. -19% for the Aqua we could witness more than one leadership change this year…
The Honda Fit holds onto the third spot it reclaimed last month but is down a horrid 45% on June 2012 to 12,189 sales, while the Nissan Note and the Toyota Crown are both up 164% to #4 and 11,338 sales and #6 and 6,765 respectively. Notice also the Honda StepWGN up 7 ranks on May to #10, the Toyota Voxy also up 7 to #13 and the Mazda Atenza (aka Mazda6) maintaining itself inside the Top 30 for the third consecutive month and the 5th time since the new generation hit Japanese dealerships.
