Germany June 2013: Mercedes E-Class at highest in almost 2 years

Should we take it as an encouraging sign for the short-term future of European new car sales? In June, the German market, by far the largest on the continent, is down ‘only’ 5% year-on-year to 282,913 registrations, bringing the year-to-date total to 1,502,630 units, down 8% on 2012. The models podium is unchanged on May and year-to-date: the VW Golf dominates as always with 8.1% share (nearly 3.5 times the sales of the #2!), ahead of the VW Passat and BMW 3 Series both at 2.3%. The Audi A3 is back up to #4 for the second time in the last 3 months and only the third time since December 2010…

VW Up!

While the Mercedes C-Class is up 2 spots on last month to #6, its big sister the E-Class is starting to feel the effects of its new generation kicking in: it is up 5 ranks to #8 with 5,334 sales and 1.9%, its best ranking in the country in almost 2 years, exactly since October 2011… The other great performer atop the sales charts is the VW Up!, up 10 spots to a best-ever #11, a ranking it also reached last January. However we have seen already that most of these sales have gone to non-private buyers.

Skoda Fabia

There are only 5 foreigners in the Top 30 this month, one less than in May: the Skoda Fabia is up 5 ranks to #15, the Octavia is up 4 to #19, the Hyundai i30 up 5 to #25, the Seat Leon/Altea/Toledo up 3 to #26 and the Seat Ibiza down 2 to #29. Further down, notice the Opel Adam stable at #33, the Skoda Citigo up 28 to #45, the Mazda CX-5 up 32 to #48, and the Mercedes CLA up just one rank to #52. However the Renault Captur is down 3 to #94 and the Peugeot 2008 down 30 to #109, most probably due to supply issues.
