For the second consecutive month, the Swedish new car market is reassuringly in positive year-on-year territory in May albeit at an extremely shy +0.09% to 25,782 registrations. Year-to-date, sales are sill down by 9% at 106,031 units. The Volvo V70 remains at unattainable levels with 1,831 sales and 7.1% share, ahead of the VW Passat at 1,228 units and 4.8% and the VW Golf with 1,089 sales and 4.2%. The star of the month is the Volvo XC60, up to a best-ever 4th place (it also reached it last January) at 1,059 units and a record 4.1% share, its first time above 4% in its home country, beating the 3.5% it hit last January.
The XC60’s progression at home is extremely interesting: the model was launched back in 2009 and has kept progressing since. This month’s result is not boosted yet by the facelift which is going on sale later in the year. Just one unit below, the Volvo V40 rounds up the Top 5, up one rank and over one percentage point market share on last month to 4,1%. Notice also the Toyota Yaris back up 14 spots to #9, the Hyundai i30 up 4 to #11 vs. #22 year-to-date, the Fiat Ducato holding at an exceptional 11th place thanks to motorhome orders, the Audi A3 up 8 to #19, Peugeot 508 up 17 to #23, Toyota RAV4 up 6 to #28 and the Chevrolet Cruze up from outside the Top 60 in April to #39.
