New car sales in the US are up an excellent 8% year-on-year in April to 1,285,338 registrations, bringing the year-to-date total to 4,974,000 units, up a solid 7% on 2012. The two most popular vehicles in the country, both pick-up trucks, register very impressive year-on-year gains which push them further away from the competition. The Ford F-Series is up 24% to 59,030 sales while the Chevrolet Silverado is up 28% to 39,395 units. Their respective year-on-year gains so far in 2013 are 19% and 23%. Another pick-up truck delivering outstanding results is the Dodge Ram, up a whopping 49% to #5 this month with 31,409 sales.
The Honda Accord rounds up the overall podium, leading the Passenger Cars segment with 33,538 sales ahead of the Toyota Camry at 31,710. The Ford Fusion is up 2 spots on March and 25% year-on-year to #6 while the Honda CR-V is back up 5 ranks to #7, its best ranking in the country so far this year. Below the Ford Escape up 52% to #9, the Hyundai Elantra breaks into the US Top 10 potentially for the first time ever at #10, up 45% on April 2012 at 24,445 sales and now ahead of the Toyota Corolla. The addition of the GT hatchback version (called i30 in other markets) has without a doubt played a role here. #3 last month, the Nissan Altima is now down to #14.
Further down, the Chevrolet Tahoe is up 15 spots to #43, the Dodge Dart is back within the Top 50 (just) at #50, the Lincoln MKZ is up 47 ranks to #87, the Buick Encore is up 10 to #110, the Tesla Model S is estimated to rank #130 (see special plug-in vehicles post here), the Porsche Cayman is back in the ranking, up 488% year-on-year to #216 and the Kia Cadenza makes its very first appearance at #244 with 61 sales.
