Whereas it was up 5% halfway through the month, the Brazilian new car market is surprisingly down 6% year-on-year in February to 222,496 registrations, bringing the year-to-date total to 519,338 units, up 6% on 2012. While the VW Gol holds onto its pole position with 15,715 sales and 7.1% followed by a very dynamic Fiat Palio at 13,131 units and 5.9% and a weak Fiat Uno with 11,109 sales and 5%, the huge event this month in Brazil is the Hyundai HB20 confirming the 4th spot it held at mid-month, reaching 10,179 units for a record 4.6% share. This is the first time a Korean model has managed to sell above 10,000 monthly units and to rank within the monthly Top 5 in Brazil, with the HB20 single-handedly pushing Hyundai up to #5 brand this month with 6.6% share vs. #9 and 2.6% one year ago!
The other recent launch to shine this month is the Chevrolet Onix, holding itself within the Top 5 for the 2nd month in a row at #5 with 9,037 sales and a record 4.1% share. Other great performers include the Chevrolet Cruze Hatchback up 8 spots on January to a best-ever #31 and the JAC J2 brilliantly taking the lead of Chinese models for the first time, up 50 ranks to #67 at 642 units and 0.3%. Finally, notice the Toyota Etios Hatchback up 5 spots to #27 and the Etios Sedan up 14 to #34, both reaching their best-ever month-end rankings but still disappointing.
