It has now been one year since I last gave you an update on Mauritius, but thanks to Lorenzo I can now share with you some information about this market for the whole of 2012. Mauritius new car sales are up a very robust 18% year-on-year in 2012 to an all-time record 9,423 registrations. Local magazine Motor Mag publishes a Top 5 best-selling models each month and a Top 10 brands, but so far no overall models ranking for 2012. Based on successive Top 5 rankings, it is clear that Korean models ruled the Mauritius ranking in 2012…
The Kia Rio should finish the year on top, having ranked #1 in April, May (at a record 11.1% share) and October and very regular at the highest level. The Hyundai i10 should follow, never topping the charts but on the podium 4 times, while the Kia Cerato could round up the podium (#1 in March, June and July) ahead of the Kia Picanto (#1 in February). The Mercedes C-Class, Chevrolet Cruze and BMW 3 Series are also very successful.
Brand-wise, interestingly two Japanese carmakers rule the All-vehicles ranking (including LCVs): Toyota takes the lead thanks to sales up 44% year-on-year to 1,348 and 14.7% share, passing Nissan at 1,291 units and 13.7%. Kia is up 54% to 1,047 sales and 11.1% in third place, followed by Hyundai up 38% to 835 units and 8.9%. Mitsubishi is down a dramatic 34% to #7, Peugeot is up 111% to #10, Great Wall down 32% to #13, Perodua up 68% to #14 and JMC up 66% to #17. In the Passenger Cars ranking, Kia is logically on top ahead of Toyota, 2011 leader Nissan and Kia.

@Stacy Gordon
Kia and Hyundai happen to be Korean brands!
Japanese car makers all the way to the top! Well, this was pretty much expected since Japanese car makers have been consistently winning over with their innovations and power-packed-performance cars. So much so that they are ruling not just the new car market but the used car segment as well!
