Whereas other regions of the UK were in clear positive territory, new car sales in Northern Ireland are up only 0.6% in 2012 to 47,519 registrations, however the first increase in 5 years. This is one third down from the high of 69,000 in 2007. The only models information for the Full Year 2012 in Northern Ireland is the pole position of the Ford Fiesta with 2,260 sales and 4.8% share.
The 4th generation Renault Clio should help the nameplate stay in the NI Top 10 in 2013.
To get more detail on the best-selling models in Northern Ireland, we have to go back to September 2012 when a Top 10 models was available. It shows the Ford Fiesta and Focus at #1 and #2 followed by the Vauxhall Corsa. So a podium very similar to the UK overall, but it’s below that things take a different turn: the Seat Ibiza ranks at an amazing 4th place vs. #24 in the UK that month, the BMW 3 Series is #5 vs. #7 and the Renault Clio at #8 vs. #30.

Maybe the new Clio when it goes on sale here next month will change things, apparently it is very good. It will be interesting to see how Dacias sell, now that they are on sale here, with prices starting at just over €7100 for the Sandero compared to just under €11700 for the cheapest Fiesta. I live in England and many people prefer to buy the German premium brands and SUVs (especially Land Rover), sales of Hyundais and Kias have increased a lot over the last few years (good cars at good prices) and of course Volkswagen is verysuccessful, they sold 183,098 in 2012 wich gives them a market share of 8.96% which makes them the 3rd best selling brand after Ford and Vauxhall. It was not all that long ago when the Clio and Megane were regularly in the UK top ten best sellers.
I am totally agree with Ian.
Clio’s situation is very strange : its sales is good in Scotland and Northern Ireland, but poor in the UK : what’s the problem with England and Wales ?!
Being from the UK (England), I find the articles on Scotland and Northern Ireland very interesting, especially the differences, the Clio does well in both countries, Vauxhall is less popular, the BMW 3 Series is even more popular, the Qashqai and Golf less so, the star in Northern Ireland is the Ibiza at an an amazing 4th. It would be interesting to know what the sales are in Wales and England. thanks again.
