World 10 months 2012: Discover the Top 185 best-selling models!

The VW Golf is now #3 worldwide in 2012, ahead of the Golf 7 launch (above).

Now that October 2012 has been covered in detail, as is now the tradition on BSCB I go through the year-to-date worldwide ranking to keep you abreast of all the longer-term evolutions, and this month there is a lot of change atop the ranking. If the Ford Focus and Hyundai Elantra ranked above the Toyota Corolla for the month of October, this does not impact the Top 2 positions which are pretty much cemented for the rest of the year. The Corolla is still in pole position year-to-date at 938,507 sales, over 100,000 above the Ford Focus - an unsurmountable gap for the Ford...

Outstanding Chinese sales have pushed the Hyundai Elantra to #5 year-to-date

However below the two favourites, the cards are being redistributed: even though it is down to #7 in October, the VW Golf passes the Toyota Camry (itself down to #11 on the back of weak Chinese sales) to establish itself on the third step of the podium with 648,469 sales. The arrival of the 7th generation in Europe early in November should only help the Golf reaffirm this new worldwide ranking up until the end of the year. Now that China has a big green tick against it with a very successful launch of the last generation, the Hyundai Elantra is up 2 ranks year-to-date to #5 with 641,198 units and could pass the Camry - and even the Golf - if strong Chinese sales continue...

Hyundai ix35

The Ford F-Series is undisturbed at #6 while the Chevrolet Cruze drops 2 spots to #7 year-to-date this month. Also on the back on extremely solid figures in China and 70,000+ worldwide sales performances this month, both the VW Passat (#8) and Jetta (#9) gain one rank, leaving the Ford Fiesta down 2 to #10. I told you the Top 10 had a bit of a shake this month! We have to go down the ranking to find other models gaining some significant ground: the Hyundai Tucson/ix35, Wuling Hongguang and Kia Cerato/K3 all up 3 to #32, #52 and #53 respectively.

Renault Duster

Renault has cracked India single-handedly with the Duster: as a result the low-cost 4WD hits a best-ever #33 this month and is up 5 spots year-to-date to #58, as is the VW Lavida at #71. The Citroen C4 and Peugeot 308 are both up 4 to #75 and #86 respectively, the Hyundai Santa Fe is up 7 to #90, the BYD F3 up 5 to #132, the Peugeot 208 up 17 to #140 and Emgrand EC7 up 5 to #141.

Finally to give a bit of perspective to all this data madness: if the Corolla and possibly the Focus will be the only models to break the magical "million annual sales barrier" this year, so far after 10 months no less than 13 vehicles have sold over 500,000 units so far, 21 more than 400,000, 41 more than 300,000, 69 over 200,000 and 161 at least 100,000...

    matgasnier :Carson – Golf and Jetta are different nameplates. Simple as that. Different generations of Jetta are on sale across the planet and are all added here, same for the Golf. If you consider Golf and Jetta as being the same car, you can add their sales Cheers,Matt

    This is a difficult question. To me it is impossible to satisfy everybody so I think you are right by separating Golf and Jetta.

    But of course it is also interesting to add both plus Lavida and Bora: 1.642.017 sales. Strong performance by Volkswagen in the compact-class.

    @matgasnier

    Are you thinking of a different Aqua? You have Prius C/Aqua as number 64 on your list and they are the US/Jap version of the same car I think.

    Yaris Hybrid is a bit different alright, but it has the same engine and it will not be sold in the same markets are the prius c, so Toyota must consider them effectively interchangeable.

    @mechelen

    I would also like to see the reasoning behind the Golf/Jetta split. They are essentially the same car. The Corolla and Focus numbers include the hatchback and sedan sales whereas they are separated for VW which does not appear consistent.

    @sdogar

    Prius and aqua are totally separate vehicles. The Aqua is in the B segment with a new smaller hybrid engine. It is marketed as the Prius c in the US and Yaris HSD in Europe.

      Carson the Prius C and Aqua are not the same car.

    Hi matt,

    One question, why you keep toyota prius and aqua sales separate when other hatchbacks and sedans are added like vitz/yaris/belta, swift/dzire etc.

      Hi Sdogar,
      Simple answer: the Aqua design-wise has nothing to do with the Prius whereas the Yaris/Vios and Swift/Dzire are the hatchback and sedan versions of one same model.
      Hope this helps.
      Cheers,
      Matt

    No, the Jetta is based on the older VW Golf 6.

    Hi Matt,
    in your Europe 7 months – article you reported 61,726 sales of the Audi A1.
    So it should be listed in this World 10 months – article, where Position 185 represents 76,125 sales only, right ?
    Cheers :)

    Sales of VW Golf/Jetta – 1 258 849
    Sales of Golf and Jetta (wich is sedan version of Golf – both cars have the same interior, engines, platform) should be put together.

    Sales of Focus = Focus hatchback + Focus sedan + Focus break

    Awesome web site – question – since you are combining some vehicles that have some variations around the world, should the GMC Sierra be combined with the Silverado? A thought. Thanks for the good work!
