Courtesy of the Pakistan Automotive Manufacturers Association, Pakistani sales of models produced locally are now available, and this is a pretty accurate representation of the most popular new cars in the country as imports are very limited. And this month there were only 9,721 new local cars sold in Pakistan, a worrying 34% year-on-year drop, however the year-to-date total is still up 4% on 2011 at 127,736 units. Big event in September: the 26 year-old Suzuki Mehran (aka Maruti 800) takes the lead with 2,551 sales for a mammoth 26.2% market share!

The Toyota Corolla, the traditional leader in the country, is down to #2 at 1,768 units and 18.2% but keeps the lead year-to-date by far at 33,219 sales and 26% vs. 25,200 and 20% for the Mehran. The Suzuki Cultus (a 1988 2nd generation Swift) climbs onto the podium with 1,022 units and 10.5% while local production of the Honda Civic has resumed, pushing it up to #6 with 778 sales and 8% vs. 1.9% last month.
