Fiat-owned prestige brand Maserati sold 6,159 units in 2011, up 9% on 2010 for a 40 million euros profit (+67%). The US remained the brand’s biggest market with 2,437 registrations (+20%) and is now followed by China for the first time, nearly doubling at 842 vehicles while registrations in Europe were down 21% to 1,519. The GranTurismo continued to be the brand’s best-seller worldwide with 2,846 sales (+27%) with the Quattroporte at 1,665 (+15%) and the GranCabrio at 1,648 (-16%).

CEO Harald Wester wants to grow sales ninefold by 2016 to 54,000… An extremely bold target in these uncertain times, but Maserati may finally get the range to deliver these figures. No less than 3 new models will be launched in the next 2 years, to coincide with the brand’s centenary in 2014.

What the 2013 Maseratina could look like…

First will be the new Quattroporte, due to be revealed at the Detroit Motorshow in January 2013. Then we will welcome the ‘Maseratina’, a smaller Quattroporte to compete with the BMW M5 which will include a turbo diesel version for the first time in the history of the brand. Finally, expected to launch in 2014 is the Kubang SUV, derived from the Jeep Grand Cherokee and produced in Detroit, the first Maserati not to be built in Italy.

The Kubang will compete with the Bentley EXP 9F

Looking at the impressive sales of Porsche Cayenne, Audi Q-Series, BMW X-Series, Mercedes GL/GLK/M Class or Land Rover, and with the imminent arrival of the Bentley EXP 9F (above) and the Lamborghini Urus, the Maserati Kubang looks like it will be the main provider of ‘mass’ sales for the brand and could not come soon enough if you ask me… I’ll get one thanks!
