Japan Kei cars June 2012: Honda NBOX cements domination

The Kei car market is up 48% year-on-year in Japan in June to 188,190 registrations, bringing the year-to-date total to 1,090,423 units, up 51% on 2011. Once again Honda is by far the best performing manufacturer in the Kei car segment with sales up a massive 241% year-on-year to 29,841 units and 151% year-to-date to 161,676. This is because of the success of the Honda NBOX, #1 for the third consecutive month and breaking the 20,000 monthly sales barrier for the very first time at 23,090. The NBOX is now #2 year-to-date with 103,841 units, passing the Suzuki Wagon R, #1 in the Full Year since 2003.
In second place we find the Daihatsu Mira, up an astounding 238% on June 2011 to 21,665 sales and leading the way year-to-date at 126,222 units, up 253% on 2011. The Suzuki Wagon R follows at 18,484 sales (+24%), ahead of the Daihatsu Tanto (+62%) and Daihatsu Move (+9%). Notice also the Suzuki Alto at #6 and +64% and the Nissan Moco at #7 and +67%. The Toyota Pixis Space finally breaks into the monthly Top 10 at #10, 9 months after its launch in September 2011.
