The Portuguese car market is not improving with sales down 42% year-on-year in April at 8,400, bringing the year-to-date total to 31,932 units, down 47%. For the first time since 1985, the market may not even pass the 100,000 units milestone this year. This month the Renault Megane is back in the pole position it last held in January and over the Full Year 2011 with 530 sales and 6.3% of the market, a much higher share than the 4.3% it commends year-to-date in 2012. The Renault Clio is down to #2 at 4.8% but stays leader year-to-date at 5%.

The Fiat Punto Evo is up 2 spots to #3 at 343 units and 4.1% and is now also #3 year-to-date with 1,097 sales and 3.4%, up from #10 in 2011. The big event this month is the arrival directly in 4th place of the all-new Peugeot 208, whereas it 'only' ranked #9 this month in its native France... Will 322 sales and 3.8% share its brings its year-to-date total to 344, already #22. Another shining star this month is the BMW 1 Series, up 3 further spots from an already impressive month of March to #6 with 273 units and 3.3%.

I’ve owned a Renault Megane and Fiat Punto in the past 2 years and both deserve to be near the top of the ranking. Both were reliable, comfortable low emission cars. Also love that BMW 1 series!

Greek car market goes even worst, due to the economical crisis.
2012 may close way far from 100.000 cars.

Even sinking in a huge economical and social crisis, the Portuguese people consider the car more important than a house or family. The vanity is huge and everybody is judged by its car. This situation is obviously ridiculous but is a fact!

The Peugeot 208 and Toyota Yaris seem to be really taking off in many european countries,
The BMW 1 series and Mercedes “E” class are doing well for cars that are not cheap, thanks Matt for the blog, loved the historical data.
