Traditionally in Ireland the end of the year see sales slow down to a gridning halt in anticipation for the new Model Year. 2011 is no exception with December sales down to a tiny 365 units. In this context the models ranking for December is totally irrelevant but for curiosity’s sake let’s notice the BMW 5 Series and Toyota Avensis equal-#1 with 51 sales and the Mitsubishi Pajero at #4, thanks to another batch of Army orders.

BMW 5 Series

In 2011 the Irish market is up 2% to 88,875 registrations. After the Renault Megane’s interruption last year, the Ford Focus, helped by the new generation, reclaims the title of best-selling car in Ireland with 4,209 sales and 4.7% share, up 8%. In fact the Ford Focus has been the #1 car in the country for 9 of the last 11 years, the only other year it didn’t rank #1 being 2004 when it was passed by the Toyota Corolla.

Renault Fluence

The next 4 models were all #1 in the monthly ranking at some stage this year. The VW Golf stays #2 with 4,003 units and 4.5%, up 1%, the Toyota Avensis is up 3 spots and 6% to 3,566 sales and 4%, the VW Passat is up 10 spots and 69% to 3,470 units and 3.9% and the Renault Fluence is up 14 ranks and 135% to 3,015 sales and 3.4%. Leader in 2010, the Renault Megane is down 36% to #9.

Outside the Top 10, great 2011 performers include the Toyota Auris up 47% to #13, the BMW 5 Series up  59% to #17, the Nissan Micra up 76% to #18, the Hyundai ix35 up 205% to #21 and the Nissan Juke up  to #22 for its first full year of sales.
