Colombia 6 months 2011: Chevy Spark threatens Aveo UPDATED

Chevrolet Spark GT

* NOW UPDATED with the Top 70 best-selling models and Top 143 Passenger Cars! Click on the title to see, many thanks to Juan *

Thanks to Juan Cortes from 4wd-mag I can share with you the Colombian Top 70 models ranking for the first half of 2011 as well as the Top 143 best-selling Passenger Cars. Sales are up a huge 48% over the period to 150,464 units, a new record for the country.

Best-seller since 2006, the Chevrolet Aveo stays solid with 16,556 sales (+21%) but see its market share drop from 13.4% a year ago to 11%. It is now threatened by the Chevrolet Spark, boosted by the new generation called ‘GT’ here, up 139% year-on-year to 15,462 units and 10.4% vs. 6.4% a year ago.

Chevrolet Captiva

Renault also shines with both the Sandero (from 5.3% to 6.2%) and Logan (from 4.9% to 5.9%) vastly improving their market share compared to 2010. The Chevrolet Captiva stays 5th and also increases its share from 2.5% to 3.3% with 5,002 sales.

Excellent performance of the Nissan Tiida going from 1.1% a year ago to 2.5% and #7 thanks to 3,824 sales. Notice the Hyundai City at #6 with 4,423 sales and 2.8%, none other than a 2nd generation Hyundai Atos solely sold as a taxi with tremendous success. The Ford Fiesta is the best-selling newcomer at #11 with 2,598 units and 1.7%.

Chevrolet N200

Chinese manufacturers are starting to get noticed in Colombia. Wuling exports its Hongtu minivan and sells it as the Chevrolet N200 to the delight of Colombian consumers: it ranks #23 overall with 1,739 sales and 1.2% share.

Great Wall Florid

In the Passenger Car ranking, no less than 7 Chinese brands are represented in Top 100! These are Chery, BYD, JAC, Great Wall, Geely, Haima and Lifan. The Chery Face is the best-selling Chinese passenger car at #38 with 222 sales, followed by the BYD F0 (201), JAC Veloce/Star (199), Great Wall Florid (53), Geely MK (47), Chery QQ and JAC B-Cross (39), with 6 additional models ranking within the Top 100.

    @tuga
    Some Renaults are built here in the “Sofasa” plant at Envigado, hence their good results on sales; Fiats are succesful on the south of the continent but here those have bad reputation and come from Brazil so there’s an ad valorem tariff of the 5%… This is such a peculiar market, Alfa Romeo’s good results are due to the sales of the Mito which is sold only in the 3dr 1.4T form and its expensive but the looks seduce lots of people

    @Miguel
    It’s sold as a sedan and as a 5dr Hatchback with the 1.6L 120CV engine only

    Posts like this are what makes this site really fascinating. Why so many taxis? Why so many TINY taxis? Renault does pretty well, but why does Fiat do so poorly, considering how strong they are in neighbouring Brasil? ( On a positive note, Alfa Mito at #70 :) YAY! )
