Malaysia May 2011: Myvi pauses, Proton takes off

Proton Persona

Malaysian car sales are down 10% in May at 44,077 registrations, bringing the year-to-date total to 246,850 units, still up 4%. This month the Perodua Myvi is unusually low in the ranking (#4) due to low stocks in advance of the 2nd generation’s June launch.

This triggers a few landmarks: the Proton Saga takes off in 1st place at 15.1% market share, its best ever in the country, and is now #1 year-to-date with 33,649 sales and 13.6%. The Proton Persona climbs onto the podium for the first time since January 2008 (!) at #3 with 4,294 units and 9.7% share, its best ever also.

Proton Exora

Proton decidedly makes the most of the situation, placing the Exora MPV up to #6, again possibly its best ever position. Other performers this month include the Proton Inspira, back on the up at #13 and 1.6% share, the Naza/Kia Forte, up 4 spots to #18 and the Chery Eastar, up 12 spots to #27.
