The UK car market is down 18% in December at 123,817 registrations, bringing the 2010 total to 2,030,846, up just 2%. This month the Vauxhall Astra is #1 for the second time in 2010 (after June) and only the third time in 3 years. The new generation Mini delivers its best-ever month in 4th place with 4,236 sales and 3.4%.
Over the full year 2010, the Ford Fiesta is the best seller for the 2nd year in a row with 103,013 sales (-12%), followed by the Astra (+19%), Ford Focus (-17%) and Vauxhall Corsa (-8%). The VW Golf ranks #5 and is the best-selling foreign model for the 6th consecutive year, very robust at 2.9% share and 58.116 sales (+2%).
Massive event at #6: the VW Polo is up 8 spots and 54% on 2009 and breaks into the year-end UK Top 10 for the first time in the nameplate’s 35 year life! This is the first time Volkswagen manages to place 2 models within the annual Top 10 in England.
Another important landmark in 10th place: the Nissan Qashqai, built in the country, breaks into the year-end Top 10 for the very first time with 39,048 sales, up 28% on 2009. This is the first time in 27 years that a Japanese model manages to rank within the annual English Top 10! The Qashqai is only the third Japanese model to manage this feat with the Datsun Sunny (#10 in 1977 and 1978 and #9 in 1982 and 1983) and the Datsun Cherry (#8 in 1981).
Land Rover places the Freelander at #38 with 15,562 sales, up 39%, the Range Rover Sport at #67 with 8,508 units, up 23% and the Discovery at #70 with 8,295 sales, up 27%. The Jaguar XF is at an impressive 51st place with 12,687 units sold, up 25% on 2009.
