Massive event in Belgium in 2002: the Peugeot 206, which seems to be more successful in Belgium than in its native France, manages to dislodge the VW Golf from the pole position it had held for at least the last 13 years. While the fight with the Clio for the #1 spot is raging in France, the 206 enjoys a rather comfortable ride in Belgium, being the best selling car there each year from 2002 to 2005, starting at 20,104 sales in 2002, peaking at 20,756 in 2003 and finishing at 18,003 in 2005.
Peugeot even manages a 1-2 for 3 consecutive years, placing the 307 at #2 from 2003 to 2005! Already #3 in 2002, the 307 peaks at 19,305 sales in 2004, only 329 below the 206. The VW Golf, dethroned and directly down to #4 in 2002, tries to claw back its way to the top all through the period but doesn’t do better than #3 in 2003 and 2004. The Opel Astra is #2 in 2002, down to #4 in 03 and #8 in 04 but back up to #3 in 05.
Other successful models during the period include the Renault Clio #5 in 02, Citroen C3 #5 in 03, Renault Megane #4 in 04, Opel Corsa #5 in 04 and Renault Scenic #5 in 05.
