USA 2004: Best year ever for the Ford F-Series!

January 30th, 2005 No comments

Ford F-Series

2004 will be remembered as the year the Ford F-Series reached its best-ever volume. At 939,511 units, Ford’s best-selling truck is up 11% on 2003 and lodges a record year for the nameplate, on sale since 1948 in the country. So a benchmark year for the automobile industry in the US! This is however not an all-time record, with the Chevrolet Impala still holding the title of biggest yearly volume in the US with over 1 million units in 1965. The F-Series reached 99,720 sales in September and 95,392 in December, its 2nd and 3rd best months ever.

Chevrolet Silverado

The Chevrolet Silverado stays #2 with sales down 1% at 680,768 units. The Toyota Camry is the best-selling passenger car in the country for the 3rd year in a row and back on the podium at #3 with 426,990 sales (+3%). The Dodge Ram is down 1 spot to #4 (-5%) while the Honda Accord (#5), Ford Explorer (#6) and Toyota Corolla (#7) all hold onto their 2003 ranking.

Notice the Ford Taurus kicked out of the Top 10 for the first time in…actually probably ever! Newcomers in the Top 30 include the Chevrolet Malibu up 13 spots to #20, the Toyota Sienna up 21 spots to #25 and the Dodge Durango up 12 spots to #30.

Iran 2002-2004: Saipa Pride & Paykan most popular

January 30th, 2005 No comments

Saipa Pride Saba

Production numbers are available for the 2002-2003 and 2003-2004 periods in Iran, giving a pretty accurate idea of which cars are the best-sellers in the country. The Saipa Pride, a 1986 Kia Pride in hatchback (Nasim) and sedan (Saba) versions, is the most popular model in the country with 206,263 units produced, up 51% over 2002-2003.

With 145,532 units produced in 2003-2004, the Paykan is not #1 in Iran, probably for the first time in 35 years! The Paykan is the iconic Iranian car, based on the 1966 Hillman Hunter, and produced by Iran Khodro since 1967. By 1972 nearly all cars in the country were Paykans and the streets are still filled with this model nowadays. More details on the Paykan here.

Paykan

The Peugeot 405 is #3 with 143,934 units (up 78%) ahead the Peugeot 206 with 60,465 units (up 75%). For its first full year of production, the first 100% Iranian car, the Iran Khodro Samand, comes in at #5 with 58,197 units.

Toyota Hilux in Thailand, December 2004

I only have official Thai figures for November this year, so if you have more complete data please make sure to get in touch!

4 of the 5 best selling vehicles in Thailand in November 2004 are pick-ups, cementing the country’s status as ‘pick-up heaven’. The Isuzu D-Max is the best seller over 11 months 2004 with 124,370 registrations, but the new generation Toyota Hilux sees its sales climb to 15,825 in November, vs. 12.751 for the Isuzu, or 27% and 21.8% market share respectively.

Therefore these 2 models command 49% of the Thai market! The Nissan Frontier is #4 and the Mitsubishi Strada #5, leaving the Toyota Vios in #3 and the only passenger car in the Top 5. Estimated Top 10 November 2004 below.
