Mexico 2003: VW Pointer ends Nissan Tsuru domination
The VW Pointer is the best-selling vehicle in Mexico for the first time.
After five consecutive record years, the Mexican new car market edges down in 2003 at -0.9% to a still extremely string 989.148 units. Nissan (+1.2%) is back above Chevrolet (-4.2%) for the #1 brands spot with Volkswagen (+5.9%), Ford (-2.4%) and Dodge (-24.6%) holding onto their positions in the remainder of the Top 5. In fact the rest of the Top 11 is unchanged, with Peugeot (+46%), Jeep (+27.7%) and Renault (+19.8%) the most dynamic. Toyota (+156.6%) ends its first full year of sales in Mexico at #12. Model-wise, the VW Pointer aka Gol (+5.7%) puts an end to 6 consecutive years of domination by the Nissan Tsuru (-20.6%), the latter being hampered by the success of the Nissan Platina (+46.3%), a rebadged Renault Symbol. The VW Jetta (+16%) remains at #4 while the Chevrolet Joy/Swing (-37.6%) drops 3 spots to #5 as its replacement the Chevrolet Corsa (+112.5%) is up 9 to #6. The Ford Fiesta (+231.2%) storms into the Top 10 at #9, up 24 spots on 2002.
